The 110-year-old, Category I, Heritage building was deemed earthquake prone in 2015 and required a significant retrofit to be code compliant.
Being a heritage building, the aesthetics of the building had to remain intact which challenged conventional retrofit techniques.
Eight Fluid Viscous Dampers were used in conjunction with localized steel moment frame and concrete shear wall upgrades to reduce the seismic demand, interstory drift and foundation retrofit efforts.
