Taylor Devices has supplied fluid viscous dampers (FVDs) and lock-up devices (LUDs) for over 270 bridges worldwide, enhancing performance by controlling seismic, wind, and braking loads while reducing demands on piers, bearings, and the size of the expansion joints.
FVDs provide supplemental damping which reduces displacements and accelerations whereas LUDs act as dynamic braces, accommodating low-velocity movements like thermal expansion but “lock” during high-velocity events to make bridge elements respond monolithically.
These devices can be exposed to low-level wind and traffic vibrations, which can amount to millions of cycles per year. Lost Motion Devices (LMDs) were developed to isolate these minor vibrations so that the FVD/ LUD does not stroke continuously which ensures long term durability, while fully engaging the device during larger design events.
