Retrofit
Built in 1988 and located in Wellington’s Central Business District, this reinforced concrete moment frame building was retrofit to meet 130% of the New Building Standard (%NBS) to accommodate expected future increases in the seismic hazard. Fluid Viscous Dampers (FVDs) were used to reduce the interstory drifts and minimize force on the moment frames. FVDs also reduced the floor acceleration which reduced the scope of diaphragm strengthening and detailing needed for the precast floors. To more easily connect the dampers to round column and to tie the diaphragm back to those same columns, steel jackets were used.
