The Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) is a new 17-story building completed in 2021 and located within close proximity to California’s most significant seismic faults, The San Andreas and San Jacinto Faults.
The new 1,000,000 square foot structure is California’s largest hospital and must meet the design objectives of Immediate Occupancy performance at the Design Level Earthquake (DE) and Life Safety performance at Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCE).
One hundred and four 800 kip FVDs were paired with a Triple Friction Pendulum Isolation System, providing 50% system damping and reduced isolator displacements from ±84” to ±42”.
This combined solution reduced the moat size, and flexible services, saving the client an estimated $10M USD.
