Pins and Guides

Taylor Devices is a proud supplier of a wide range of shear pins, mounting pins, and journal bearings/guides for use in shock & vibration isolation systems, damper assemblies, spring assemblies and more.

Our proprietary superfinishing techniques accurately control the magnitude and direction of surface finishes so that friction can be controlled, especially for high-speed dynamic applications.  Many of our finishes include a proprietary Teflon-based finish for even tighter frictional control.  Our finishing processes and specifications have continuously evolved since 1955 to maintain superior performance and to maintain compatibility with current machining and finishing technology.

Virtually all of our structural dampers for the past 25+ years have been supplied with tight-fitting mounting pins.  These include approximately 800 projects worldwide.  Shear pins are supplied for maintaining uni-axial response of an isolated structure. Journal Bearings / Guides are designed according to specific project-related requirements.

Features

  • Pins include options such as bolted-in end plates, threaded keepers, threaded nuts, retaining rings, or cotter pins.
  • Sizes are available from ¼ inch up to 12 inches in diameter.
  • Materials used for pins are typically heat-treated precipitation hardening stainless steel and 300 series stainless steels.
  • Pins and guides can be tested statically, dynamically, or a combination of both including applying a side-load into the pin/guide while it is being cycled axially to verify friction and structural integrity. Our testing force capability is approximately 2,000,000 lbs.
  • Taylor Devices provides complete analysis, design, manufacturing, and testing all within our campuses in N Tonawanda NY.

Previous Projects

In certain cases, engineers have relied on Taylor Devices to provide entire mounting hardware for damper systems. For example, in 2015 Taylor Devices provided fluid viscous dampers for Loma Linda University Medical Center. We also provided vertical pins, up to 12 inches in diameter, that were used in conjunction with the base isolation system that suspends the entire hospital.
